Welcome

Welcome to the Advocates' tour to Ethiopia website.

Here you can keep up to date with the activities of our group of advocates as we travel to Ethiopia from the 20th to the 31st of May 2009 to see the work of Compassion.Advocates are sponsors with a heart for our ministry who volunteer some of their time on an ongoing basis to promote Compassion in their churches and within their spheres of influence.

The team will spend time meeting staff and children in projects, visiting the homes of Compassion sponsored children, seeing how the country office operates and meeting formerly sponsored children. We will try to update the site each day whilst we are in Ethiopia and we hope you find it interesting. Enjoy!

Rural Project Day

Today we visited Holeta Mekane Yesus Church, about an hour’s drive away from Addis Ababa. Here the air feels clearer and the children can enjoy the freedom of working and playing safely together within the spacious grounds.

Students range in age from four to twenty one and each of them were engaged in a variety of educational, physical, spiritual and vocational activities tailored to suit the cultural needs of their local community. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of each student participating in their Bible classes as they explored the word with each other.

In an open air classroom a group of girls was skilfully weaving colourful baskets, which once completed are sold to members of their families and their church congregation providing the project with a source of income. In another area a teacher was facilitating the development of woodwork skills, including making furniture for the project and even a musical instrument. The high quality of the work impressed us all. A computer room and a library further aided the learning and development of the students.

Later on in the day we were able to sing songs to the children who responded with an Amharic version of the song “Jesus’ love is very wonderful” complete with actions! We were able play outside with the children who were confident and eager to encourage us to join in their games of football, volleyball and “duck duck goose.” Members of the football team were presented with some Chelsea football kits which were kindly donated by the English football club.

We were privileged to hear from the project staff about how they promote Compassion’s core aims and values and ensure the holistic development of each child. It was so evident that these children are growing up with an awareness of God’s love and care for them. It was wonderful to speak with the children who had high hopes and aspirations for their future including becoming a doctor, pilot, sociologist and a computer scientist. Seeing these children who once had no hope, sharing their dreams for their future and believing that this was achievable was an incredible testimony to the greatness of our God.
