This afternoon we were overwhelmed by a crowd of singing mothers with their very young children all bearing roses for us at the Akaki Christian Brethren Child Development Centre. This is a Child Survival Programme for 0-3 year olds and their caregivers, run by Compassion in partnership with this local church. It has a holistic approach to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable mothers and their children. As well as supporting healthy pregnancies and safe births, the programme provides the following: care in the form of nutrition, parental education, medical assistance, immunisation programmes and checkups, as well as literacy training and social support for mothers and caregivers.
It was wonderful to hear that through being part of this programme, so many of the mothers have found faith in Jesus Christ and had their lives turned around. This was so evident in their faces, testimonies, joyful singing and prayers.
We visited Sisoy's home, who was a child in the programme. His parents, Meseret and Amore, bore witness to the impact of their new found faith on their daily lives and family relationships. Despite living in one room with mud floors, a corrugated roof, and outside kitchen, we were struck by their peace, contentment, love and hope.
Fantastic to see so many updates, makes me feel part of what is going on. God is clearly blessing you and the people you are meeting. What wonderful work Compassion is doing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the updates.
Really exciting to see how enthusiastic the children are and the impact it is undoubtedly having on all the advocates. It must be really encouraging and humbling all at the same time. By the way don't forget in all the excitement that mum, dad, Jess & James all wish Rhiannon a very happy birthday for the 24th.

We had an emotional visit to the Child Survival Programme where we were all overwhelmed by each being given a rose by the toddlers to welcome us. After which we went to visit one of the homes of the children, only to find that it was the same little boy that had given Tommy the flower! The home was one room 6ft by 8ft with a mattress on the floor and two stools in which the mother and her three children aged 10, 6 and 2 lived. She made us so welcome and the neighbouring children from all around came to see us.
